After graduating from the institute Niko and Otar work at a wine plant. Otar takes everything calmly, easily makes friends with people. Niko has more difficulties. He won’t be a mute witness to the violations and refuses to supply wine as ordered in notes from the bosses. Niko’s efficiency and honesty irritate many people at the plant. But when he was to be punished for having refused to comply with another direction of the chiefs concerning the supply of unmatured wine, the specialists, who respected the winemaking traditions, rose to the defense of the young engineer.
OTAR IOSSELIANI
Born in Tbilisi in 1934. Finished the music college as violinist and conductor (1952), graduated from the director's department of VGIK (1961, class of A.Dovzhenko, M.Chiaureli). Worked at Gruzia-Film Studio. People’s Artist of Georgia, winner of international film festivals and film awards. At present he lives and works in France. His filmography includes “Pastorale” (1976, 2 prizes of the Berlin IFF), “Favourites of the Moon” (1984, 2 awards at the Venice IFF), “And Then There Was Light” (1989, prize of the Venice IFF), “Chasing Butterflies” (1992, 2 prizes of the Venice IFF), “Brigands – Chapter VII” (1996, Nika Award, prize of the Venice IFF), “Farewell, Home Sweet Home” (1999, European Film Award), “Monday Morning” (2001, prize of the Berlin IFF), “Gardens in Autumn” (2006), “Chantrapas” (2010), etc.
