Heroic drama based on a title novel by Yuri Bondarev. The film recounts the story of one battle of the Great Patriotic War, the battle on the Volga. The Russian troops commanded by General Bessonov were ordered to stop the armour tank armada of Manstein who aimed to force their way to Stalingrad and relieve the circled Paulus Army.

GAVRIIL EGIAZAROV
1916–1988
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan. Served as a lighter at the Baku Film Studio, where later organized a workshop of animation. In 1941 he graduated from VGIK, cinematography department. His filmography includes “From Dawn Till Sunset” (1975), “A Portrait with Rain” (1977), “Horses Aren't Changed at the Crossing” (1980), “Go Home!” (1982), “Partings” (1984), “Ivan the Great” (1987), etc. People’s Artist of Russia. Laureate of the Russian State Award.
