ELDAR RYAZANOV
1927–2015
The famous Soviet and Russian film director, scriptwriter, actor, poet, playwright and teacher was born in Samara. In 1950 he graduated from VGIK (class of G.Kozintsev), then worked in documentary cinema for five years. In 1955 he became a director at Mosfilm Studios, where he shot his debut feature “Carnival Night” (1956), which was an enormous success with the audience. Among the most well-known and universally loved movies are “Ballad of a Hussar” (1962), “Beware of the Car” (1966), “Old Men: Robbers” (1971), “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!” (1975, ТВ), “Office Romance” (1977), “The Garage” (1979), “A Railway Station for Two” (1982), “A Cruel Romance” (1984), “Forgotten Tune for the Flute” (1987), etc. People’s Artist of the USSR, winner of State Awards. He was the host of the “Kinopanorama” TV program, taught at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors. Since 2002 he was President of the Russian Film Academy “Nika”. Headed his own film club in Moscow.
