“Mother’s Airfield” tells the story of an elderly Mongolian shepherdess (Eji) who adopts a Chinese boy (Maonaohai) relocated during the 1960-s famine from Shanghai to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. Years later when Maonaohai has grown into a healthy and strong young man, he joins the air force and reluctantly leaves the place he now regards as home. Eji is left alone again to work the land and dream of seeing her adopted son once more. Knowing that Eji’s health and hopes are failing, a drunken neighbor tells Eji that Maonaohai will soon fly his plane to visit Eji on her isolated farmstead. She consequently sets about laboring to build a runway. None of the local people can bear to disillusion Eji, and caught up in the well-meaning lie, the whole community soon finds themselves assisting her in preparing the ground for Maonaohai’s anticipated return.
